AeroPress

The AeroPress is a versatile, portable brewer that uses air pressure to push water through coffee. Its flexibility makes it a favorite of travelers, campers, and competition baristas alike.

Overview

Invented by Alan Adler in 2005, the AeroPress uses a plunger to create air pressure that forces water through ground coffee and a paper filter. The result is a smooth, clean cup that can be brewed in under two minutes. Its simplicity and durability have made it one of the most popular manual brewers in the world.

The AeroPress is uniquely versatile: it can brew at espresso-like concentrations or at pour over-like strength. It can use the standard method (pour and press) or the inverted method (steep, then flip and press). Recipes vary widely, and the annual AeroPress Championship celebrates this creativity.

Key variables include grind size (medium-fine is common), water temperature (175 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit is traditional, though hotter is increasingly popular), and brew time (1 to 3 minutes). The AeroPress is famously forgiving, producing good results even with imperfect technique.
